Killing Them Softly (2012) is an American neo-noir crime film written and directed by Andrew Dominik and starring Brad Pitt. It is based on George V. Higgins’ 1974 novel, Cogan’s Trade. Against the backdrop of the 2008 American financial crisis and presidential election, Johnny ‘Squirrel’ Amato devises a plan to rob a Mafia poker game. To help him carry out the heist, he turns to Frankie, a former colleague, and Russell, an Australian expatriate with a heroin addiction who makes money by stealing purebred dogs to sell in Florida. Their target is Markie Trattman, who has been rumored to have staged his own illegal poker game robbery in the past. Squirrel assumes that Markie will be framed for this new crime and quickly dispatched by his criminal associates without further investigation.

Despite their lack of experience, Frankie and Russell successfully carry out the armed robbery and escape with a sizable sum of around one hundred thousand dollars. Driver, an enigmatic criminal boss, meets with hitman Jackie Cogan to discuss how to handle the aftermath of the robbery. The mob-operated poker games have ceased due to fear of further violence, causing chaos in the underground criminal economy. While Jackie realizes that Markie had no involvement in the heist, he asserts to Driver the importance of eliminating him as a precautionary measure against future robberies by other low-level criminals. However, Driver strongly opposes killing Markie and argues that it would only bring unnecessary suffering upon him.
