Kinds of Kindness (2024)
Kinds of Kindness (2024), an absurdist black comedy anthology film, was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and co-written by Efthimis Filippou. It made its debut at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2024, where Plemons took home the Best Actor award. The film follows a ‘triptych fable’ structure and features three unique yet interconnected tales.
1. The Death of R.M.F. Robert Fletcher is completely under the thumb of his demanding boss and romantic partner, Raymond. Raymond dictates every aspect of Robert’s existence, even going as far as orchestrating his marriage to Sarah, purchasing their home and vehicle, and prohibiting them from having children. One day, Raymond commands Robert to intentionally crash their car in order to take out a man only identified by his initials, R.M.F.. Despite surviving with only minor injuries, Raymond insists that Robert try again. However, Robert is hesitant and expresses his fear and reluctance to carry out the task.
2. R.M.F. is Flying. Officer Daniel is grieving over his wife Liz’s disappearance at sea. Fortunately, he learns that she was rescued by R.M.F. in a helicopter. To his relief, Liz is back with no injuries. However, there are noticeable changes in her; her mannerisms and hobbies are different from before, their cat being aggressive towards her, and her feet not fitting into her shoes anymore. This causes Daniel to become wary of Liz’s odd behavior. Amidst his suspicions, Liz drops the bombshell that she’s pregnant.
3. R.M.F. Eats a Sandwich. Emily and Andrew are followers of a mysterious sex cult led by the enigmatic figures Omi and Aka. The group practices a ritual involving a high-temperature sauna to purge ‘toxins’ from those accused of cheating on Omi or Aka, with Aka tasting their sweat to judge their purity. Emily and Andrew are specifically searching for a woman with the ability to revive the deceased. They assess a candidate named Anna, but she does not meet their expectations. Despite this, Emily secretly visits her estranged husband Joseph and daughter on a regular basis. Later, at the cult’s headquarters, Omi reveals details about another potential candidate. However, the couple soon discovers that she has already passed away.
