King of New York (1990)
King of New York (1990), a neo-noir directed by Abel Ferrara and written by Nicholas St. John, follows drug lord Frank White as he attempts to gain control over New York City’s criminal underworld. Following his release from Sing Sing Penitentiary, White and his crew, led by his loyal associate Jimmy Jump, solidify their power by eliminating rival groups such as the Colombian drug cartel and Triad. In one instance, White personally takes out a Mafia boss who refuses to cooperate with him. The notorious actions of White and his team attract the attention of the NYPD’s narcotics squad. Detectives Bishop, Gilley, and Flanigan attempt to confront White but are unable to make an arrest due to lack of evidence. As a result, they focus on apprehending White’s associates after receiving cooperation from a surviving member of the Colombian drug cartel.
After freeing the men from jail, White’s lawyers are successful again in taking down White and his crew. In their frustration, Gilley and Flanigan carry out a secret mission to take down White by storming a night club where he is partying. The attack results in casualties for White’s men, with both White and Jump managing to escape. However, they are soon pursued by Gilley and Flanigan. Unfortunately, Jump manages to injure Flanigan fatally in an ambush. Despite Gilley’s attempts to revive his partner, he succumbs to his wounds and in a fit of anger, Gilley shoots Jump before attending Flanigan’s funeral. Tragically, Gilley himself meets his end when White takes him out in a drive-by shooting during the funeral service.
