King of Thieves (2018)
Directed by James Marsh, King of Thieves (2018) is a British heist film that revolves around the infamous Hatton Garden safe deposit burglary of 2015. The main character, Brian Reader, is a retired thief who reunites with old criminal acquaintances at his wife’s funeral. During their brief conversation, they all express interest in carrying out one final heist – targeting the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit. With plans set in motion after the funeral, Brian and his cohorts, all in their 60s and 70s except for one young alarms expert named Basil, gather to meticulously plan their robbery. To minimize the risk of getting caught, they choose to execute the heist over the Easter holiday weekend when there will be less activity in the area. Disguised as gas repairmen, they make their way into the deposit building and skillfully deactivate the alarms before drilling a hole into the vault wall.
After the jack breaks, their plan is thrown off course. They agree to reconvene the next day with a different tool. However, Brian has a change of heart and decides it’s too risky to return. Basil meets with him and attempts to sway his decision, but Brian remains firm. Instead, he gives Basil a list of the most valuable diamonds in the safety deposit boxes. In exchange, Basil promises to split his share of the robbery with Brian. The next day, they return to the Safe Deposit armed with a replacement tool and successfully move the cabinet from the wall, allowing two of them to enter the vault. With crow bars in hand, they break open numerous safety deposit boxes and make off with over £14 million worth of jewels and cash.
