King Richard (2021)

An American biographical sports drama film, King Richard (2021), is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and written by Zach Baylin. Living in Compton, California, Richard Williams shares a home with his wife Brandy, three step-daughters, and two daughters – Venus and Serena. His dream is to turn his daughters into professional tennis players and he has been planning for their success since before they were born. Together, Richard and Brandy coach the girls every day while also balancing their jobs as a security guard and nurse. However, despite their efforts, they have yet to find a suitable professional coach for Venus and Serena. In an effort to promote the girls’ skills, Richard creates brochures and videotapes but has not been successful so far. One day, he takes them to see coach Paul Cohen while he is practicing with John McEnroe and Pete Sampras.
Despite his initial reservations, he agrees to watch the girls practice, and is impressed. However, the Williamses cannot afford professional coaching, and Paul refuses to train both girls for free. Consequently, he selects Venus as his sole pupil while Serena continues to work with Brandy. Through Paul’s guidance, Venus quickly thrives in junior tournaments. Despite their success, Richard stresses to Venus and her sisters the importance of remaining grounded. At one tournament, Serena unexpectedly signs up to compete without Richard’s knowledge. As their triumphs continue, the family feels like outsiders among the mostly white and affluent competitors. Richard meets with prominent agents, yet fears they will take advantage of his daughters’ talent and opts to withdraw them from the junior circuit altogether. Despite Paul’s warning that this choice could sabotage their chances of going pro, Richard stands by his decision and dismisses Paul as their coach.
