King Solomon’s Mines (2004) became the fifth film adaptation of Henry Rider Haggard’s 1885 novel. The story follows a wealthy businessman, Mr. Bitter, on a safari in Africa with his guides Allan Quatermain and Bruce McNabb. Despite Mr. Bitter’s desire to kill a family of elephants, Quatermain objects but is betrayed and overpowered by McNabb when they open fire. The mother elephant later wreaks havoc on their camp, ultimately leading to Bitter’s demise and her own death as Quatermain prepares to put her out of her misery. Meanwhile, Samuel Maitland, an affluent British explorer, sends a letter and map to his daughter Elizabeth about the legendary mines of King Solomon before being captured by native KuaKuani tribesmen.

Quatermain, upon arriving in London, hopes to spend quality time with his son, Harry. However, his ex-wife’s parents seek custody and have deemed him an unfit parent. Informed by his lawyer that the only chance of winning the case is with a large sum of money, Quatermain seeks solace at the bar. Elizabeth Maitland, accompanied by her uncle and bodyguard Captain Good, tracks him down and asks for his assistance. Initially refusing their request and accepting her contact information, Quatermain has a change of heart upon recognizing Elizabeth’s father. As they make their way back to her hotel room, they encounter a Russian man named Sergei who Quatermain bravely fends off. Upon reaching the room, they discover it has been ransacked while Elizabeth finally discloses that she needs help retrieving a map in Africa in exchange for her father’s safety.
