King Solomon’s Mines (1937) is a British adventure film directed by Robert Stevenson. It is based on the 1885 novel of the same name by Henry Rider Haggard. In 1882, Irish dream chaser Patrick ‘Patsy’ O’Brien and his daughter Kathy have been unsuccessful in their search for diamonds in the mines of Kimberley, South Africa. They convince Allan Quartermain to take them to the coast in his wagon. On their journey, they come across another wagon with two injured men. While Umbopa recovers, Silvestra Getto dies after claiming to know the location of the legendary King Solomon’s mines. Patsy takes advantage of this opportunity and sneaks away during the night, without risking his daughter’s life. Despite Kathy’s pleas, Quartermain does not pursue him and instead joins forces with his new clients: Sir Henry Curtis and retired naval commander John Good who are on a hunting expedition.

Kathy takes Quartermain’s wagon without permission in order to chase after her father. When they catch up to her, she refuses to go back with them. Instead, they all travel together through the harsh desert and mountains shown on the map. Despite the difficult journey, Curtis and Kathy develop feelings for each other. Upon reaching the other side of the mountains, they are confronted by hostile locals who bring them before Twala, the chief of their tribe. Twala then guides them to a place where they can see the entrance to some mines, guarded by a notorious witch doctor named Gagool. That evening, Umbopa confides in them that he is actually the son of the previous chief who was killed by Twala in a deceitful manner. He also reveals his alliance with dissidents led by Infadoos, who are determined to overthrow Twala’s cruel rule.
