King Solomon’s Mines (1950) is a Technicolor adventure film based on Henry Rider Haggard’s novel of the same name. Set in ‘British East Africa’ (Kenya Colony) during 1897, experienced safari guide Allan Quatermain is convinced by Elizabeth Curtis to search for her missing husband, who disappeared while looking for King Solomon’s legendary mines in unexplored Africa. Elizabeth and her brother John Goode join the expedition. Despite Allan’s initial reservations about having women on a safari, he and Elizabeth gradually develop feelings for each other during their arduous trek. Along the way, they encounter Van Brun, a solitary white man living with a local tribe. Van Brun reveals that he crossed paths with Curtis, but when Allan recognizes him as a criminal seeking to evade capture, the group takes him hostage for their safety.

In an attempt to kill Allan, Van Brun fatally shoots Khiva, one of his loyal companions. Despite this setback, Allan manages to defeat Van Brun and flee from the enraged villagers. They encounter a tall enigmatic native named Umbopa, who becomes their companion. Upon arriving at the area rumored to hold the mines, they are greeted by individuals resembling Umbopa. It is then revealed that their new friend is actually of noble blood and has come back to overthrow King Twala, the tyrannical ruler. After Umbopa departs with his followers to incite a rebellion, Allan, Elizabeth, and John journey towards a fraught encounter with Twala at his village. In a moment of crisis, John uses his final rifle bullet to neutralize an assailant, temporarily pacifying the natives.
