Kingdom of Heaven (2005)
Kingdom of Heaven (2005) is a historical drama, directed and produced by Ridley Scott and written by William Monahan. In medieval France, Balian, a grief-stricken blacksmith, is approached by a band of Crusaders visiting his village. Their leader, Balian’s father Baron Godfrey, invites him to join their journey to the Holy Land, but he declines. That night, Balian learns the truth about his wife’s death from his half-brother, the town priest, and in a fit of anger kills him. The next day, seeking redemption for his actions and peace for his wife’s soul in Jerusalem, Balian joins his father’s group. However, their plans are disrupted when soldiers arrive to arrest them and in the ensuing chaos, Godfrey is struck by an arrow.
Upon arriving in Messina, they encounter a contentious situation with Guy de Lusignan, a potential future ruler of Jerusalem. His plan to undermine the fragile alliance between the Crusader states and Sultan Saladin involves enlisting the brutal anti-Muslim Templar Knights. The night before their departure, Godfrey knights Balian and tasks him with protecting the vulnerable before succumbing to his own fatal arrow wound. Balian sets sail for the Holy Land, but his journey is hampered by a storm that leaves him as the sole survivor of his ship. Making his way to Jerusalem on foot, Balian engages in a fight with a Muslim cavalier over a horse he discovers. Despite defeating the cavalier, Balian shows mercy towards his servant and is aided by him in reaching Jerusalem.
