Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) is a film that follows the story of Harry Hart, a member of Kingsman, a private intelligence service founded by the British elite. In 1997, Harry’s colleague Lee Unwin sacrifices himself to save Harry. Feeling responsible for Lee’s death, Harry returns to London and gives his young son Gary ‘Eggsy’ a medal and an emergency assistance number. Seventeen years later, Eggsy is rebellious and has dropped out of training for the Royal Marines despite his abilities. When he gets arrested for stealing a car, he calls the emergency number given to him by Harry. This leads to Harry arranging his release and taking down Eggsy’s abusive stepfather’s gang. Through their conversation, Harry explains the origins of Kingsman and how it was formed by the British elite who lost their heirs in World War I; they use their wealth to protect the world. The organisation takes its name from the tailor shop used as a front for their operations on Savile Row.
‘Galahad’ Harry puts Eggsy forward as a replacement for ‘Lancelot’, who was unfortunately slain by assassin Gazelle during a rescue mission to free renowned climate change expert Professor James Arnold from captors. The Kingsman’s technical support member, known as ‘Merlin’, makes an alarming discovery – Arnold is back at work as if nothing has occurred. Hart makes an attempt to gain information from the professor at Imperial College London, yet the interrogation is cut short when a microchip implanted in Arnold’s neck explodes, taking his life and leaving Harry in a comatose state. Further investigation leads to the revelation that the detonation signal was sent by Valentine, a billionaire philanthropist offering free SIM cards and internet access to the entire world. After emerging from his coma, Hart goes undercover as another philanthropist in order to confront Valentine.
