The Shaggy Dog (2006)
The Shaggy Dog (2006), directed by Brian Robbins, is an American science fantasy family comedy film. Dave Douglas, a busy deputy district attorney in Los Angeles County, is prosecuting Justin Forrester for allegedly firebombing Grant and Strictland, a pharmaceutical corporation. Forrester denies the accusation, but claims that Grant and Strictland have been participating in unlawful animal experimentation. This causes a rift between Dave and his daughter Carly, who happens to be one of Forrester’s students. Dave’s intense focus on work also takes a toll on his relationships with his wife Rebecca and son Josh. Meanwhile, Mr. Lance Strictland’s team of money-hungry geneticists, led by Dr. Kozak, have taken a 300-year-old sacred Bearded Collie named Khyi Yang Po from a Tibetan monastery. Through their research, they discover that Khyi Yang Po’s genetic makeup has the power to invade and alter the cells and DNA of those who come into contact with it when placed in a vaccination.
After Carly welcomes her new dog, named Shaggy, into their home, Dave comes back from work and takes the canine to the garage. Excitedly, Shaggy retrieves the newspaper for Dave but accidentally bites his hand. As a precaution, Dave is tested for rabies, which thankfully comes back negative. However, he soon discovers that he inexplicably transforms into a sheep dog whenever he gets caught up in activities that dogs typically enjoy, like chasing cats or fetching sticks. These transformations can only be reversed by sleeping, but as Dave’s absence from his family grows longer due to his condition, it puts a strain on their relationships. Unaware of Dave’s predicament, his family continues to treat him as Shaggy and he begins to realize how little he truly understands them. Determined to make things right, Dave resolves to mend his relationships with his wife and kids.
