In 2006, Dony Permedi, a student at the New York City School of Visual Arts, created an animated film called Kiwi! (2006) for his Master’s Thesis project. The music for the film was composed and performed by Tim Cassell. The story follows a kiwi with a dream of flying, which became a sensation on YouTube. Unofficial versions of the video often feature the song Mad World by Gary Jules and gained popularity as viral videos. The animation has garnered a devoted fan base due to its poignant message and has inspired fans to create alternative endings where the kiwi survives. As of May 27, 2021, Kiwi! has been viewed over 44 million times. It was also voted the Most Adorable video of 2006 in the first annual YouTube Video Awards on March 26, 2007.

The video follows a determined kiwi bird as it works hard to attach trees to a steep cliff, creating a horizontal pathway. Once finished, the kiwi returns to the top of the cliff and puts on an aviator’s cap before leaping off. The camera then turns sideways, revealing the reason for its efforts. A single tear falls from the kiwi’s eye as it realizes its dream, flapping its small wings as it “flies” above the tree-lined path. The final outcome is left up to interpretation, with some hearing a crash while others hear the sound of a parachute opening.
