Klaus (2019) is an animated holiday adventure comedy from director and writer Sergio Pablos, also known for creating Despicable Me. This production was brought to life through the efforts of Pablos’ company, The SPA Studios, and released by Netflix. The film begins in 19th-century Norway, where the Royal Postmaster General has a plan to change his son Jesper Johansen’s ways. Considered lazy, spoiled, and selfish by his father, Jesper is sent to postman training in hopes that it will improve his character. After seeing Jesper’s lackluster performance, his father assigns him a seemingly impossible task – to deliver 6,000 letters within a year in the distant northern island town of Smeerensburg. Failure means losing his family’s fortune. To Jesper’s dismay, he finds that the town is mainly occupied by two feuding clans – the Ellingboes and the Krums. Despite desperately trying to get locals to send letters, no one seems interested. In a last-ditch effort, Jesper stumbles upon an isolated cabin filled with handmade toys and meets Klaus, who lives there alone. Scared of Klaus’ imposing figure, Jesper hastily leaves but forgets

The news spreads among the other children, and they all flock to Jesper the following day with the belief that they will receive a toy if they send Klaus a letter. Jesper seizes this opportunity to further his own goal and approaches Klaus, asking for a donation of his toys. To Jesper’s delight, Klaus agrees on the condition that they operate at night and keep their activities secret. One of the boys from the Krum clan receives a toy and uses it as an excuse to play with an Ellingboe girl, much to the outrage of both clans. Yet as more children write letters to Klaus, Jesper takes it upon himself to tell them that Klaus only delivers toys to well-behaved children and has a way of knowing when someone is misbehaving. Encouraged by this idea, the children start performing acts of kindness in hopes of receiving a gift from Klaus. This small change in attitude gradually influences the rest of the townsfolk, eventually leading them to end their long-standing feud. The children then turn to Alva, a former teacher now turned fishmonger due to her bitterness towards teaching. They ask her for help in learning how to read and write so they can send letters to Klaus.
