Knightriders (1981), an American action drama film by George A. Romero, follows the story of Billy and his traveling motorcycle jousting troupe. As their leader, Billy takes on the persona of ‘King William’ and strives to uphold Arthurian ideals within the group. However, with the demands of modern life and financial struggles, tensions have started to rise among the troupe. Billy’s recurring dream of a black bird adds to his personal turmoil. To make matters worse, a promoter named Bontempi arrives and further complicates things. Despite being injured, Billy continues to push himself, causing even more strain on the group. Following a night in jail, Billy is taken aback by the actions of some members of his troupe at the fairground.

He witnesses one of his colleagues being violently treated by a crooked local officer after refusing to participate in any dishonest dealings. Despite returning to the troupe and anticipating performing with them, Billy is surprised to see that some members are considering joining forces with the promoter. This only adds to his sense of betrayal, which is further intensified when Linet, his queen, confesses that her love for him may not be her main reason for staying with the troupe. Tensions escalate when Morgan, who believes he should be their leader, triumphs in the day’s tournament and an altercation breaks out between the performers and unruly spectators. During this chaos, Billy finds himself facing off against an Indian rider adorned with a black eagle emblem on his breastplate – a symbol that haunts Billy’s dreams.
