Knives Out (2019)

Knives Out (2019) is a compelling American mystery penned and helmed by Rian Johnson. The talented Daniel Craig leads an impressive eleven-actor cast as renowned private detective Benoit Blanc, called upon to investigate the tragic death of celebrated writer Harlan Thrombey. The morning after his lavish eighty-fifth birthday party at his Norfolk County estate, Thrombey’s body is found in his attic study with a fatal knife wound. His dysfunctional family, including his mother, children, spouses, and grandchildren, were all present at the party. The previous evening, only a select few knew that his nurse Marta Cabrera, a Brazilian immigrant, was likely the last person to see him alive. She had followed her usual routine of playing Go and administering medication before retiring for the night. As authorities continue their questioning a week later following Thrombey’s funeral, speculation arises that it may have been suicide. All family members are questioned at the mansion and confirm the events of that night that support this theory.
At the interviews, renowned private detective Benoit Blanc is also present as a consultant hired anonymously and paid in advance. While he already seems to know information about the family members, he cleverly provokes them into speaking poorly of each other while remaining guarded about their own secrets. One unexpected interviewee is Marta, suspected by Blanc to have been Harlan’s confidante and unable to lie without experiencing physical symptoms. Notably absent from the interviews is Harlan’s privileged grandson Ransom Drysdale, who left the party early after a private conversation with his grandfather. Although Ransom was not at the mansion at the time of Harlan’s death, his absence during the interviews holds little significance.
