The rulers of Gongmen City, known as the peacocks, first created fireworks for peaceful purposes. However, their son, Lord Shen, discovered that gunpowder used in firecrackers could also be used as a weapon. Concerned about Shen’s fixation on this destructive potential, his parents consulted a soothsayer who predicted that his actions would ultimately be thwarted by a ‘warrior of black and white’. Upon hearing this prophecy, Shen concluded that the warrior would be a panda and ordered his wolf army to eradicate all pandas. Appalled by this act of genocide, Shen’s parents banished him from the city. In present times, Shen and his wolf army continue to pillage villages in search of scrap metal to create cannons for his plan to conquer China.
In the meantime, Po is relishing his new role as a Kung Fu Master alongside the Furious Five. However, Master Shifu cautions him that he has not yet achieved inner peace. Their peaceful training is disrupted when a wolf army attacks a nearby village. Po and the Five swiftly intercept them but are taken aback by a symbol on the leader’s armor that triggers a flashback of his mother. Seeking answers, Po turns to his father Mr. Ping for information. The goose reveals that he found an abandoned infant Po in a shipment of radishes outside his restaurant and decided to adopt him as his own son. As tensions rise, Po and the Five are sent to Gongmen City after learning that Shen has killed Master Thundering Rhino with a powerful cannon. Upon their arrival, they discover that Shen has also imprisoned the other city regents, Masters Ox and Croc. However, Shen’s grip on the city is weakened when he learns from the soothsayer about a prophecy involving Po being a panda.
