L.A. Confidential (1997)
Set in 1953 Los Angeles, L.A. Confidential (1997) is a classic neo-noir crime film directed, produced, and co-written by Curtis Hanson. The story follows the LAPD as they work to repair their public image after years of corruption. Sergeant Edmund Exley, known for his ambition and drive, is constantly compared to his late father who was also a well-respected detective. It is believed that his father’s killer goes by the name ‘Rollo Tomasi’, a symbol of all elusive criminals. Meanwhile, narcotics sergeant Jack Vincennes is more interested in chasing fame and collaborating with tabloid journalist Sid Hudgens than solving crimes. Officer Wendell White has a volatile temperament and often resorts to violence in order to intimidate and extract confessions from suspects, especially those involved in domestic abuse cases – a personal issue for White due to his own mother being murdered by his father.
On Christmas Eve, White crosses paths with upscale prostitutes Lynn Bracken and Susan Lefferts, as well as former officer Leland Meeks. They are employees of Pierce Patchett, a wealthy entrepreneur who runs Fleur-de-Lis, an undercover prostitution operation featuring surgically enhanced women resembling famous actresses. White becomes romantically involved with Bracken. In the aftermath of the ‘Bloody Christmas’ scandal, where intoxicated officers assaulted inmates, Exley convinces top officials like police chief Loew, district attorney Ellis, and captain Dudley to prosecute retired cops in order to protect the department’s reputation and secure his own promotion to detective lieutenant. He pressures Vincennes to testify, while White chooses not to comply and is subsequently suspended.
