L.A. Story (1991)
L.A. Story (1991), an American romantic comedy directed by Mick Jackson and starring Steve Martin, follows the life of Harris K. Telemacher, a TV weatherman in Los Angeles. Dissatisfied with his stagnant relationship with social-climbing girlfriend Trudi and the perceived lack of intellectual stimulation in his job despite holding a Ph.D. in the arts and humanities, Harris longs for something more fulfilling and magical in his life. He feels disillusioned by what he views as the shallowness and superficiality of L.A., from pretentious coffee orders to strange freeway shooting etiquette. As a way to break away from his mundane routine, Harris spends his time roller-skating through art galleries with friend Ariel, offering offbeat reviews to acquaintances, remixing Shakespearean works, and seeking an escape from ordinary life. It is at a luncheon with friends that he meets Sara, a journalist from London who instantly captivates him.
While driving home that night, his car suddenly breaks down on the freeway. As he looks around for help, a freeway traffic condition sign catches his eye. Its messages seem to be directed specifically at him, offering cryptic advice on his love life. Despite developing feelings for Sara, there’s a hurdle in their potential relationship – she’s trying to work things out with her ex-husband, Roland. Not wanting to hold onto false hope, Harris starts seeing SanDeE*, an aspiring spokesmodel with a bubbly personality whom he met at a clothing store. However, after their first date, Harris learns that Trudi has been unfaithful for three years with his agent. This discovery prompts him to pursue Sara even further. But things get complicated when Sara feels torn between her sense of obligation towards Roland and her growing feelings for Harris, who is now simultaneously navigating a new romance with SanDeE*.
