La Femme Nikita (1990)
Luc Besson wrote and directed the French-language action thriller film La Femme Nikita (1990). The movie follows the story of Nikita, a teenage junkie with a nihilistic outlook. One night, she takes part in a robbery at her friend’s parents’ pharmacy which turns into a shootout with the police. Tragically, her partners-in-crime are killed and she is left suffering from withdrawal symptoms. Desperate, she ends up killing a police officer. As a result, Nikita is convicted of murder and given a life sentence in prison. However, government officials have another plan for her. Faking her death, they extract her from prison and place her under the custody of ‘the Centre’, an elusive organization belonging to the DGSE. Given a choice between becoming an assassin or occupying ‘row 8, plot 30’, her fake grave, she initially resists but ultimately selects the former and proves to be a natural at taking lives.
Under the guidance of her trainer, Amande, she transforms from a drug addict to a stunning femme fatale while learning crucial skills such as computer operations, martial arts, and handling firearms. Like Nikita, Amande was also rescued and trained by the Centre. Nikita’s final test involves carrying out her initial mission of assassinating a foreign diplomat in a busy restaurant while evading his heavily armed bodyguards and returning safely to the Centre. With this accomplishment, she graduates and assumes the identity of Marie as a sleeper agent in Paris. While working undercover, Nikita meets Marco at a supermarket and their relationship quickly becomes intimate. However, Marco remains unaware of her true occupation and is curious about her past and lack of familial connections or friends. In an attempt to maintain her cover, Nikita introduces Uncle Bob to Marco over dinner.
