La Femme Nikita (1997 — 2001)

Based on the French film Nikita by Luc Besson, La Femme Nikita (1997–2001) (literally ‘The Woman Nikita’; called Nikita in Canada), is a Canadian action-drama television series. Co-produced by Jay Firestone of Fireworks Entertainment and Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, it was adapted for television by Joel Surnow. The show premiered on the USA Network cable channel on January 13, 1997, and had a successful five season run until March 4, 2001. It also aired on the CTV Television Network in Canada and was widely distributed in other countries. Section One, a clandestine anti-terrorist organization, fakes the death of Josephine’s twin sister and recruits her as a new operative due to her beauty and lethal abilities. However, ‘Josephine’ turns out to be less ruthless than expected as she was wrongfully convicted and never actually committed murder.
In the TV series, Nikita stands out from the film versions due to one crucial difference: she is portrayed as innocent. Unlike in the movies, she is not a killer or a drug user, but rather a homeless young woman who finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Section One, a highly secretive counter-terrorism group, frames Nikita for the murder of a police officer and she is sentenced to life in prison. However, her supposed suicide leads her to be recruited by Section One. With their threat of ‘cancellation’, Nikita is forced to carry out their brutal tactics in fighting terrorism while struggling to maintain her moral compass. This internal conflict becomes the primary focus of the series. Notably, one significant moment from both films involves Nikita’s first mission: assassinating a VIP in a packed restaurant.
