Labor Day (2013) is an American drama film written and directed by Jason Reitman, adapted from the 2009 novel of the same name by Joyce Maynard. Set in 1987, it tells the story of Adele Wheeler, a despondent single mother living with her 13-year-old son, Henry, in a rural home. While out shopping, they encounter a man who convinces them to take him back to their house. The man is later revealed to be Frank Chambers, an escaped convict wanted by the authorities. As the film unfolds through flashbacks and imagery, we learn that Frank is a Vietnam War veteran who had married his pregnant girlfriend, Mandy. However, a year after their child’s birth, they had a heated argument during which he questioned whether or not he was the father. In a fit of rage, he pushed her into a radiator causing her death. It is also implied that their baby may have drowned. Frank was subsequently convicted of murder and imprisoned.

Adele confides in Frank about her past, revealing a series of miscarriages and ultimately the loss of a full-term baby girl. These traumatic experiences have caused Adele to struggle with crippling anxiety and depression, which Henry’s father later explains as a contributing factor to their failed marriage. In gratitude for her hospitality, Frank takes care of household tasks and repairs any damages around the house. In return, Adele teaches him how to dance while Frank teaches Henry about cars and baseball. Together, they all learn how to bake a delicious peach pie. As Adele and Frank’s relationship blossoms, they make plans to flee to Canada with Henry by packing up their car and cleaning out the house. Meanwhile, Henry forms a bond with a bright and rebellious girl named Eleanor, whom he visits one last time before their departure.
