Lady in the Water (2006)
Lady in the Water (2006) is a riveting fantasy thriller by acclaimed director M. Night Shyamalan, who also produced alongside Sam Mercer. The story follows Cleveland Heep, the newly appointed superintendent of a Philadelphia apartment complex, whose tragic past drives him to discover a mysterious Narf named Story in the pool. Just as he saves her from the clutches of a Scrunt, an eerie wolf-like creature camouflaged in grass, she reveals she has come to find the Writer – a person with magical powers who will pen a book that will save humanity. When Heep mentions this to Mrs. Choi’s daughter Young-Soon, she recalls stories passed down by her mother and shares them with Heep.
After questioning residents Farber, Bell, Dury, and five smokers, Heep discovers that the tenant Vick Ran is the Writer struggling to complete The Cookbook. Bringing Vick to Story, their meeting eliminates his fear and sharpens his inner voice. She later explains that The Cookbook contains views and ideas so significant they will inspire a future President or great Midwestern orator to positively change the world. Vick deduces and Story confirms that he will be killed due to the controversial nature of his ideas. As Mrs. Choi recalls more details of the Narf legend, Heep gains a better understanding of the situation. The invincible simian-like quartet known as the Tartutic serve as the peacekeeping force in the Blue World and have forbidden any attack on Story while she travels home.
