Land of the Dead (2005) is a post-apocalyptic horror film written and directed by George A. Romero. Following the zombie apocalypse, human civilization has reorganized and established a chain of protected city-states across America. One such sanctuary is located within the triangular peninsula of downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where a feudal-like government governs its citizens. Surrounded on two sides by rivers and barricaded on the third with an electrified fence guarded by a militia, this city provides relative security for its inhabitants. Beyond its borders lies a desolate landscape with abandoned suburbs and open countryside, overrun by hordes of the undead. The wealthy and influential reside in a luxurious high-rise known as Fiddler’s Green, while the rest of the population struggles to survive in poverty.
In this protected zone, Paul Kaufman, the city’s ruthless plutocratic ruler, holds control over all forms of commerce. One of his most successful endeavors is Dead Reckoning, an armored personnel vehicle designed to navigate through zombie-infested areas with ease. The mastermind behind this efficient machine is Riley Denbo, who serves as its commander as well. Unlike Kaufman, who is known for his harsh rule, Riley is highly respected among citizens for his contributions in protecting and providing them with essential supplies such as food and medicine that are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. Using Dead Reckoning, Riley and his team bravely venture into dangerous territories overrun by zombies to scavenge for necessary goods. They also acquire luxury items like designer clothing and top-shelf liquor which serve as valuable trade commodities in Kaufman’s oppressive oligarchy.
