Larry Crowne (2011)
The American romantic comedy film, Larry Crowne (2011), centers on middle-aged Navy veteran, Larry who is suddenly fired from his job at a big-box store. His termination is due to a lack of college education, despite his seniority and exceptional work ethic. Produced and directed by Hanks himself, the film’s screenplay was co-written with Nia Vardalos. The inspiration for the story comes from Hanks’ own experience studying at Chabot College. Facing unemployment and the potential loss of his home, Larry turns to his neighbor Lamar for guidance. With little funds left on unemployment benefits and unable to afford driving his SUV, he purchases a scooter from Lamar. As suggested by Lamar, Larry enrolls at East Valley Community College to better his future prospects.
At the college, he becomes a part of a diverse community and is nicknamed ‘Lance Corona’ by classmate Talia. Two of Larry’s classes are speech, taught by Mercedes Tainot and economics by Dr. Ed Matsutani. While initially struggling in speech class, he excels in economics. After school, Mercedes turns to drinking at home as a way to cope with her unhappy marriage to Dean – a former professor-turned-writer-turned-blogger. However, in truth, Dean spends most of his time indulging in internet porn. Meanwhile, Talia introduces Larry to her boyfriend Dell Gordo’s scooter rider club and helps update his decor, hair and wardrobe. To help make ends meet, Larry’s friend Frank, who runs the diner, offers him a job as he previously worked as a Navy cook.
