Last Looks (2021) is an American-British mystery film, directed by Tim Kirkby, from a screenplay by Howard Michael Gould based on his novel of the same name. Over a decade ago, LAPD detective Charlie Waldo (Charlie Hunnam) made an arrest in a homicide case involving Lydell Lipps. However, two years later, he discovered that Lipps was innocent and that his own partner, known as 7-Eleven, had framed him out of personal spite. Determined to clear Lipps’ name, Charlie took action but soon realized the system was rigged against proving innocence. In frustration, he left the LAPD and gave interviews to anyone who would listen. Though this strained his relationship with the system, Charlie didn’t mind. He left Hollywood behind and retreated to the woods with minimal possessions. Then, out of the blue, Charlie’s ex-girlfriend Lorena Nascimento (Morena Baccarin) shows up with a job offer from Black Bear Studios. They want him to use his skills as a private investigator to look into the murder of Monica Pinch, wife of Alastair Pinch.
Alastair, the main suspect in his wife’s murder, plays a lead role in Black Bear’s highly successful TV drama, Johnnie’s Bench. The studio is determined to keep their star actor and has hired a prominent lawyer and a renowned private detective, Charlie. Despite being passionate about uncovering the truth, Charlie declines the offer due to his aversion to fame and publicity. Lorena pleads with Charlie to reconsider, but he remains firm in his decision. Several days later, a police officer visits Charlie and informs him that Lorena has disappeared. It turns out she stole something valuable from her boss, Don Queue, a powerful figure in the cartel world. Don Q suspects that Lorena gave this “item” to Charlie and makes threats towards him. Later that night, a group of troublemakers attack Charlie at his trailer and warn him to stay away from Don Q’s case.
