Last Night in Soho (2021)
Last Night in Soho (2021), a psychological horror film directed and co-written by Edgar Wright and Krysty Wilson-Cairns, follows the story of Ellie. She yearns to break into the fashion world during the Swinging Sixties era. However, her dreams are haunted by her mother’s suicide when she was a child. Raised by her grandmother, Ellie’s lingering connection with her mother is through occasional sightings of her ghost in mirrors, which her grandmother is aware of. In pursuit of her fashion design aspirations, Ellie leaves behind her rural home near Redruth, Cornwall, for London to attend the London College of Fashion. Unfortunately, she struggles to fit in among her peers, especially due to her bullying roommate Jocasta. The only person who shows kindness is fellow student John. Frustrated with dorm life, Ellie moves into an elderly Ms. Collins’ bedsit.
That night, Ellie experiences a vivid dream where she is transported back in time to the 1960s. At the Café de Paris, she observes a confident young blonde woman named Sandie who expresses interest in becoming a singer at the club. Sandie catches the eye of Jack, a charming Mod manager, and they begin a relationship. The next morning, Ellie finds a love bite on her neck and is inspired to design a dress similar to one worn by Sandie. In another dream, Sandie auditions at a Soho nightclub arranged by Jack before returning to her rented bedsit – the same one that Ellie has also rented. Fueled by these visions, Ellie changes her hair color to blonde and adopts Sandie’s fashion style. She also gets a job at a pub and is noticed by a silver-haired man who recognizes her resemblance to Sandie. In subsequent dreams, Ellie discovers that Sandie’s life is not as she had hoped – being pimped out to Jack’s male business associates against her will.
