Late Night (2019)

Late Night (2019) is an American comedy-drama film directed by Nisha Ganatra from a screenplay produced by Mindy Kaling. Katherine Newbury, an acclaimed talk show host with extensive experience in comedy, faces declining ratings for her long-running program. Facing pressure from network president Caroline Morton to improve or risk being replaced, Katherine brings on Molly Patel to the writing team. As the only Indian-American woman among a group of white male writers, Molly initially struggles due to her lack of comedy experience. However, she proves her worth by providing Katherine with excellent material and innovative ideas for reaching a wider audience. Ultimately, their collaboration leads to success for the show.
Katherine discovers that Caroline wants to select young, popular comedian Daniel Tennant as her replacement. She objects, citing Daniel’s vulgar and misogynistic humor. With support from her writers, she stands up to the network and decides to stay on as host. However, a leaked email from writer Charlie reveals that Katherine had an affair with him while her husband Walter was dealing with his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis. Amidst the chaos, Katherine fires Molly for criticizing her response to the news. Eventually, she reconciles with Walter and her fellow writers and confesses her infidelity to her audience. Through her genuine love for the show, she persuades Caroline to let her remain as host and apologizes to Molly, rehiring her. The show continues to air successfully.
