Laurel Canyon (2002)

Laurel Canyon (2002), an American drama film written and directed by Lisa Cholodenko, follows the story of newly engaged couple Sam and Alex as they embark on a move to Los Angeles in pursuit of career opportunities. Sam, a recently graduated medical student, is starting his residency in psychiatry, while Alex is nearing completion of her Ph.D. dissertation on genomics. The plan was for the couple to stay at Sam’s mother Jane’s vacant home in the eccentric Laurel Canyon area of the city. However, their plans are thrown off when they arrive to find Jane still there, caught up in a passionate love affair with her British boyfriend and his band, who are recording an album.
As partying takes precedence over finishing the record, tensions arise between Sam and his mother due to their differing mindsets and strained relationship. Alex is intrigued by the new lifestyle presented by her future mother-in-law, causing her to spend less time on her dissertation and more with the band. Her fascination with Jane and Ian leads to an intimate moment in the pool. Meanwhile, Sam also finds himself attracted to resident Sara, who reciprocates his feelings boldly. They share their first kiss after an interns’ meeting, while Alex experiences her own first encounter with Jane and Ian in the pool. Later on, at a packed hotel suite party celebrating the band’s album release, Alex attends while Sam and Sara declare their mutual attraction in a parking lot.
