Lava (2014)
Produced by Pixar Animation Studios, Lava (2014) is an American animated short film that tells a musical love story spanning millions of years. Its inspiration comes from the striking contrast between the serene beauty of tropical islands and the fiery power of ocean volcanoes, which is also reflected in its titular song written by Murphy. In an interview with KHON-TV based in Honolulu, Murphy shared that his fascination with Hawaii began during his honeymoon on the main island 25 years ago. To further immerse himself in these emotions, he returned to Hawaii shortly before production began.
On a tropical island in the Pacific Ocean, a solitary volcano observes the lively creatures frolicking with their partners and yearns to have one of its own. Each day for millions of years, it serenades the ocean, releasing its lava and gradually sinking into the water. However, unbeknownst to the male volcano, a female submarine volcano has been listening and falling in love with him. She finally emerges on the brink of his extinction, but her back is turned and she cannot see him. Devastated, he submerges entirely into the ocean’s depths. Yet, as fate would have it, he hears her singing his song to him and his heart reignites. With renewed passion, he erupts back to the surface beside her. The two merge, forming a single island where they can sing together harmoniously.
