Layer Cake (2004)
Layer Cake (2004), a British crime film, marked the directorial debut of Matthew Vaughn. The screenplay was adapted by J. J. Connolly from his novel of the same name. The story follows XXXX (an unidentified character), a London cocaine dealer known for his aversion to violence and business-like approach. His trusted colleagues include Morty, his enforcer and partner, and Gene, an Irish gangster who maintains a relationship with mob boss Jimmy Price. Despite his plans to retire from the criminal world, XXXX is summoned by Jimmy for a lunch meeting where he is given two tasks. The first involves locating Charlie, the drug-addicted daughter of one of Jimmy’s associates. To assist him in his search, XXXX turns to con men Cody and Tiptoes. After discovering that Charlie has been likely abducted, they are unable to identify her kidnapper.
XXXX’s second task involves overseeing the purchase of one million ecstasy tablets from the ‘Duke’, a recently returned low-level criminal in London. The Duke, accompanied by his girlfriend Slasher and crew led by right-hand man Gazza, had obtained the pills through dubious means from Serbian war criminals. During this transaction, XXXX meets the Duke’s nephew Sidney and develops a crush on his girlfriend Tammy. However, his attempts to sell the pills to Liverpool gangsters Trevor and Shanks are unsuccessful as they reveal that the pills were stolen and a vengeful Serbian assassin named Dragan is on their trail. Being associated with the Duke also makes XXXX a target for the Serbians.
