Second Wind (1966)
The French crime-thriller film, Second Wind (1966), directed by Jean-Pierre Melville and starring Lino Ventura, follows incarcerated gangster Gustave ‘Gu’ Minda. Known for his loyalty to the French underworld and refusal to give up his accomplices to the police, Gu escapes from prison and travels to Paris to visit his sister Manouche and her bodyguard Alban. Meanwhile, Manouche’s current boyfriend Jacques Ribaldi is killed in her restaurant by rival gangster Paul Ricci’s henchmen. Concerned for her safety, Paul’s brother Jo sends two men to extort money from Manouche at her home. However, Gu arrives just in time and eliminates them with his signature method – shooting people from a moving car.
Commissaire Blot, from the Paris police, quickly deduces the shooters’ motives and identities. He is determined to solve both cases and catch Gu, utilizing a combination of manipulation and patience. Eventually, Manouche and Alban hide Gu in a Parisian apartment while he grows a mustache. After this, he follows Manouche to Marseille with plans of fleeing to Italy on her cousin’s boat once he acquires a fake passport. Not wanting to rely on Manouche’s money, Gu enthusiastically accepts an offer from Paul to take the place of Jeannot Franchi in an upcoming heist. This opportunity had initially been offered to Gu’s friend Orloff, who deemed it too risky and instead recommended Gu for the job.
