Le Doulos (1962)
Adapted from Pierre Lesou’s novel of the same name, Jean-Pierre Melville’s French crime film Le Doulos (1962) follows Maurice Faugel as he reconnects with his friend Gilbert, who is appraising jewels from a recent heist. Eager to plan a robbery, Maurice enlists the help of Silien and Rémy. In a twist, Maurice ends up using Gilbert’s own gun to kill him and steal the jewels and a large sum of money. It turns out that Gilbert had killed Maurice’s girlfriend Arlette years ago to prevent her from talking to the police while Maurice was in prison. As prominent gangsters Nuttheccio and Armand show up at the house, Maurice makes a quick exit and buries his loot near a lamppost. That evening, he spends time with his girlfriend Thérèse while Silien arrives with their friend Jean to deliver equipment for the planned robbery.
After Silien’s departure, he uses a payphone to contact Inspector Salignari. Later that same day, Maurice and Rémy set off to burglarize a home in affluent Neuilly. Meanwhile, Silien arrives at Thérèse’s apartment and violently interrogates her about the robbery location before restraining her to a wall radiator. As the police respond to the robbery, Inspector Salignari corners Maurice and Rémy. In the gunfight that ensues, Rémy is fatally shot while Maurice sustains a shoulder injury. Ultimately, Salignari is killed in the exchange. After leaving the gun next to Rémy, Maurice flees and eventually loses consciousness just as a car pulls up.
