Le Mans (1971)

The film, Le Mans (1971), directed by Lee H. Katzin and starring Steve McQueen, revolves around a fictional 24 Hours of Le Mans auto race. Top-notch driver Michael Delaney comes across Lisa, the widow of his former rival Piero Belgetti, purchasing flowers before the big race. He takes a trip to the location where Belgetti tragically passed away in a car accident the previous year. As he recalls the moment when Belgetti lost control of his Ferrari, causing both their cars to crash, Lisa – like many others – blames Delaney for the tragedy. At the race, she is visibly upset as she tries to come to terms with her feelings. In an uncomfortable encounter, Delaney struggles to find a place to sit in a sparsely populated track commissary and eventually asks Lisa if he can join her since it’s the only available spot. There is undeniable tension between them but also a sense of mutual admiration and possibly even attraction.
After 13 hours of racing, Erich Stahler loses control of his Ferrari 512 at Indianapolis Corner, causing teammate Claude Aurac to also crash. Delaney, initially distracted by the flames from Aurac’s car, is unable to avoid a slower car and collides with the guardrail. The impact causes his Porsche 917 to bounce across the road multiple times and ultimately becomes totaled. Despite both drivers surviving, Aurac sustains serious injuries and is airlifted to a hospital for treatment. Delaney receives brief medical care at the track clinic where Lisa arrives in a state of distress over his crash. She had been trying to move on from Piero’s death but the accident brings up painful memories for her. Delaney comforts her and shields her from a group of reporters.
