Le Samouraï (1967) is a neo-noir crime thriller film directed and written by Jean-Pierre Melville, starring Alain Delon. Jef Costello, an impassive hitman who resides in a sparse single-room apartment in Paris, keeps a small caged bird as his companion. Using meticulous techniques, he creates foolproof alibis with the help of his lover, Jane. However, after carrying out his latest contract killing on nightclub owner Martey, Jef is spotted by several witnesses including Valerie, the club’s piano player. Despite being brought in for a lineup by the police, none of the witnesses can positively identify him. Still under suspicion, Jef is followed by the commissaire but manages to lose his tail.
When he goes to collect his payment for the hit, he is instead attacked and shot in the arm by the man he meets. It becomes apparent that Jef’s unknown employers now consider him a liability since he is suspected of Martey’s murder. After tending to his injury, Jef heads back to the nightclub. In his absence, two officers place a listening device in his room, causing distress to the caged bird. When the club shuts down for the night, Jef enlists Valérie’s help and she agrees, having been advised by his boss not to reveal his identity as the killer. He inquires about who hired him and she directs him to call her after two hours. Meanwhile, authorities search Jane’s residence and make a deal with her – retract her alibi for Jef and they will leave her alone. She refuses without hesitation.
