Leatherheads (2008)
Leatherheads (2008), released by Universal Pictures and directed by George Clooney, is a sports comedy film set in the year 1925. Jimmy ‘Dodge’ Connelly, captain of the Duluth Bulldogs and a seasoned player, is determined to save professional football from its imminent collapse. In search of a savior, Dodge convinces Carter ‘the Bullet’ Rutherford, a decorated war hero from Princeton University, to join the struggling team. With Carter’s fame giving football a much-needed boost, things finally start looking up for the sport. However, as Chicago Tribune reporter Lexie Littleton digs into Carter’s past to uncover any potential fabrications about his war heroics, she finds herself caught in a love triangle between Dodge and Carter. One night, Carter admits to falsely accepting the surrender of a German platoon during the war. When he discovers Lexie’s true intentions and her kiss with Dodge, their relationship is strained.
Driven by pressure from Carter’s manager, Lexie decides to publish her findings despite the fallout it may cause. The story causes a firestorm of accusations and reprimands. In an effort to cover it up, Carter’s manager resorts to shady tactics, including bribing the original witness to change their account. Meanwhile, Dodge’s efforts to legitimize pro football gain momentum. The new commissioner of football, appointed by the U.S. Congress, formalizes the game’s rules and cracks down on improvisational tricks. As part of this new direction for football, the commissioner also takes on the task of addressing the Carter controversy. With public opinion turned against Lexie, Dodge devises a plan; during a private hearing at the commissioner’s office, he threatens Carter with a confrontation by his former army comrades. According to Dodge, they are waiting just outside the door to commend him for his heroic actions.
