Legend (1985)
Legend (1985) is an American epic dark fantasy adventure film directed by Ridley Scott and written by William Hjortsberg. The Lord of Darkness, aiming to create eternal night, instructs the goblin Blix to kill the unicorns in the nearby forest and bring back their horns. Blix enlists her companions Pox and Blunder, who follow Princess Lili as she visits her lover, Jack in the Green. Jack teaches Lili how to communicate with animals and then blindfolds her before taking her to a stream where unicorns play. When Lili reaches out to touch one of the creatures, Blix shoots it with a poison dart from her blowpipe, causing the others to flee. Despite Jack’s anger, Lili dismisses his concerns and throws her ring into a pond as a challenge, promising to marry whoever can retrieve it. While Jack searches for the ring underwater, the goblins find the poisoned unicorn and extract its horn, bringing about winter.
After Lili flees in terror, Jack struggles to break through the frozen pond. Finding shelter in a peasant cottage, Lili witnesses the goblins testing the alicorn’s power and learns of their treachery against the stallion. Following them to meet with Darkness, she overhears that the mare must still survive for their plan to cast eternal night on the world. In a failed attempt to use the alicorn against Darkness, Blunder is captured and thrown into the castle dungeon. Meanwhile, Jack is joined by forest elf Honeythorn Gump, will-o’-the-wisp Oona, and dwarves Brown Tom and Screwball as they stumble upon the mourning mare and her lifeless stallion. Jack begs for forgiveness and learns from the mare that a great hero must retrieve and return the alicorn to its rightful owner.
