Legends of the Fall (1994)
Legends of the Fall (1994) is an epic Western drama directed by Edward Zwick. Frustrated with the US government’s repeated betrayals towards Native Americans, Colonel William Ludlow resigns from the Army and relocates to a remote part of Montana. Joining him are his Cree friend One Stab, who helps him build a ranch for his family. Along with them are hired hand Decker, a former outlaw, and his Cree wife Pet and daughter Isabel Two. The Ludlow family consists of three sons: Alfred, the oldest; Tristan, the middle child; and Samuel, the youngest. After his mother Isabel leaves for the East Coast due to her struggles with Montana’s harsh winters, Tristan makes a promise never to mention her again. At just 12 years old, Tristan decides to touch a sleeping grizzly bear. The bear wakes up and injures him, but he manages to defend himself by cutting off one of its claws.
Years later, Samuel returns from Harvard University with his fiancée, Susannah. She is immediately drawn to Tristan’s charm and charisma, but ultimately chooses to marry Samuel. However, their plans are put on hold when Samuel announces his intention to join the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War I. Despite their father’s disapproval, Alfred also decides to enlist. Tristan, who initially did not want to join the war effort, changes his mind after promising Susannah that he will protect Samuel. The brothers end up in the 10th Battalion, CEF with Alfred serving as an officer. During one particularly treacherous charge into no man’s land, Alfred is injured and sent to a field hospital. It is here that Tristan discovers that Samuel has volunteered for a dangerous reconnaissance mission.
