Les Misérables (2019)
Based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 French historical novel, Les Misérables (2019) is a British television series that tells the story of Jean Valjean’s struggles to escape Inspector Javert. The series, directed by Tom Shankland and adapted by Andrew Davies, features a talented cast including Dominic West, David Oyelowo, and Lily Collins. Produced by the BBC and supported by PBS member station WGBH Boston’s Masterpiece series, with distribution handled by BBC Studios, it originally aired in the United Kingdom from 30 December 2018 to 3 February 2019. Canadian audiences can now watch the series on CBC and CBC Gem starting from 10 January 2021. Set in post-Napoleonic France during a time of growing unrest in Paris, this television adaptation brings to life Hugo’s timeless masterpiece.
After the Battle of Waterloo, Monsieur Thénardier attempts to loot fallen soldiers but instead rescues a French officer. Meanwhile, young Marius Pontmercy is raised by his conservative grandfather, Monsieur Gillenormand, who forbids any contact between him and his estranged son-in-law Colonel Georges Pontmercy. Jean Valjean serves a 19-year prison sentence for stealing bread, enduring harsh labor and mistreatment from the guards, particularly Javert. Upon release, Valjean is rejected by society due to his criminal record. Bishop Myriel takes pity on him and provides shelter, saving him from the police after he steals silver cutlery. However, Valjean’s guilt leads him to try and return a coin that he stole from a young boy named Petit Gervais, who has already fled. In another part of town, Fantine falls in love with Félix Tholomyès but he abandons her and their daughter Cosette to go back to his family.
