Less Than Zero (1987)
Less than Zero (1987) is an American drama film directed by Marek Kanievska, which is based on the 1985 novel of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis. Clay Easton, a dutiful college freshman on the East Coast, returns home to Los Angeles for Christmas to find that things have changed drastically since he last left. His former high school girlfriend and now model, Blair, has fallen into cocaine addiction and has been involved with Clay’s old friend Julian Wells. Julian’s life has taken a turn for the worse after his record company failed, leaving him with a drug habit and estranged from his family. In desperate need of money to fuel his habit, Julian is being pursued by Rip – someone he knew from school – for $50,000 that he owes him.
Clay’s revived romance with Blair coincides with Julian’s increasingly erratic behavior. His addiction has spiraled out of control, leading Rip to coerce him into prostitution as payment for his debts. After a harrowing night of overdose and evading Rip, Julian pleads with his father for assistance. Despite his plea, Rip remains unsympathetic and tempts Julian to attend a lavish Christmas party for affluent gay men in Palm Springs. As fate would have it, Clay manages to track down Julian and rescue him from the dangerous event. However, their escape is met with violence when Rip and his accomplice confront them. With Blair by their side, Clay and Julian make a daring escape through the desert, determined to help Julian overcome his addiction once and for all.
