In 1963, Lorna marries her new boyfriend Donnie Weboy for support with raising Jimmy. However, during a shopping trip together, Margaret witnesses Donnie physically abusing both Lorna and Jimmy. Concerned for her daughter-in-law’s well-being, Margaret goes to check on her at their home but is informed by their tenant that they have abruptly left town.
After packing her bags with the intention of rescuing Jimmy, Margaret is joined by George, although he initially hesitates. They seek help from a local sheriff who leads them to Forsyth, Montana and a nearby shop owner who has ties to the Weboy family. George is taken aback when he realizes Margaret has brought his revolver but she stands firm in her belief that it will be necessary. On their way to Gladstone, they encounter Peter Dragswolf, a young Native American man who offers them food and shelter for the night. He advises them to find Bill Weboy, Donnie’s uncle. The next day, they meet Bill and learn that Donnie’s mother Blanche would like to meet them. At her home, Blanche initially appears friendly but once Lorna and Jimmy arrive, her true demeanor surfaces as she makes disrespectful remarks towards the Blackledges and speaks harshly towards Lorna.
