The original was based on John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel of the same name. The story takes place in March 1983, in Los Alamos, New Mexico. A disfigured man is brought to the hospital where he becomes a suspect in a recent murder case. As an unnamed detective tries to question him, the man escapes through a window leaving behind a note that reads: ‘I’M SORY ABBY’. Prior to this incident, Owen, an unhappy and neglected 12-year-old boy whose parents are going through a divorce, meets Abby and her older companion who move in next door.
Meanwhile, at school, Owen faces constant bullying from Kenny and his friends. Despite lying to his mother about it, Owen confides in Abby who encourages him to stand up for himself. From then on, they become close friends communicating through Morse code between their adjoining apartments. After abducting a local teenager, Abby’s companion Thomas drains the boy’s blood into a jug, but spills all the contents. After being starved, Abby attacks a neighbor and drinks his blood, killing him and forcing Thomas to dispose of it. Thomas hides in the back of another car later that night, but is found. During the struggle, the car flips over and falls into a ditch.
