Life of Pi (2012)

Life of Pi (2012), an adventure-drama film directed and produced by Ang Lee and written by David Magee, shares the story of Pi Patel. In Canada, a writer is told that Pi would make a compelling subject for a book. Pi recounts his experiences to the writer: being named after the famous French swimming pool Piscine Molitor Patel by his father and adopting the nickname ‘Pi’ during his secondary schooling in Pondicherry as a means of avoiding bullying. Growing up in a Hindu household, Pi becomes interested in Christianity and Islam at the age of 12, ultimately embracing all three religions as he simply wants to love God. While his mother supports this spiritual exploration, his rationalist father attempts to steer him towards secularism.
Pi, whose family owns a zoo, takes an interest in one of the inhabitants, a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Against his father’s wishes, Pi gets dangerously close to the tiger and is forced to witness its killing of a goat. A few years later, when Pi is 16 years old and his father announces that they must move to Canada due to ‘The Emergency’. His father plans to sell the animals and settle there. The family makes arrangements to travel on a Japanese freighter with all their animals. However, while Pi is on deck during a storm, the ship sinks into the Mariana Trench, tragically drowning his entire family. In a desperate search for his loved ones, Pi struggles until he is thrown into a lifeboat by a crewman.
