Lanie Kerrigan, a successful reporter for a Seattle television station, conducts an interview with self-proclaimed prophet, Jack, in hopes of proving his football score predictions to be true. However, Prophet Jack not only accurately predicts the football score and the next day’s hailstorm, but also foresees Lanie’s death in just seven days. As her fears escalate with the fulfillment of Jack’s first two prophecies, Lanie once again meets with him to test his abilities further. This time, Jack predicts a relatively significant earthquake in San Francisco at 9:06 am, which also comes true. With her impending demise looming over her, Lanie is forced to reevaluate her life choices.
Lanie finds solace in her boyfriend Cal Cooper, a famous baseball player, and her family, but it is not enough. Her lifelong aspiration of appearing on network television seems out of reach. Struggling with her desperation, Lanie makes professional mistakes but surprisingly finds support from an unexpected source – Pete Scanlon, the cameraman she once had a casual fling with and who happens to be her archenemy. He introduces her to a new perspective on life – living every moment to the fullest and pursuing her dreams without hesitation. Lanie even spends a day living with Pete and his son Tommy, who resides with his mother. They spend quality time together and that night, they sleep together for the second time. The next day brings an unexpected turn of events when Lanie receives a job opportunity in New York, something she had always dreamt of.
