Lifted (2006), an American computer-animated short science fiction film directed by Gary Rydstrom and produced by Pixar Animation Studios, follows the story of Stu, a young alien taking an alien abduction test. His task is to abduct a sleeping farmer named Ernie while being observed by his unemotional examiner, Mr. B. To complete the task, Stu must use an extensive array of unlabeled toggle switches from memory. However, Mr. B remains stoic and offers no guidance on which switches to use. With each hesitant flick of the switches, Stu’s attempts are unsuccessful and cause Ernie to collide with the walls and ceiling without waking up. As Stu becomes more frustrated, he loses control and randomly swipes at the array of switches. This sends Ernie bouncing around the room like a pinball, knocking over furniture but remaining asleep.
After a quick glance at his notes, Stu successfully transports Ernie out of the window and onto the spaceship. Unfortunately, he forgets to close the cargo hatch before turning off the tractor beam. As Ernie falls towards the ground, Mr. B intervenes and catches him. Then, he swiftly works on the controls to return Ernie to his bed and tidy up the mess created by Stu. Disheartened by his error, Stu holds back tears while Mr. B allows him to take control and launch the spaceship for their journey home. Eagerly grabbing the steering yoke, Stu begins maneuvering but ends up crashing the ship onto Ernie’s house with a loud thud. The underside of the spaceship is now covered in dirt and debris, leaving behind only a tall pillar of soil in a crater caused by the open cargo hatch. On top of this mound, Ernie remains sound asleep in his bed.
