Lightyear (2022)

Lightyear (2022) is an American animated science-fiction action-adventure film produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. A Star Command exploration vessel known as ‘the Turnip’ alters its course to investigate indications of life on the unfamiliar planet T’Kani Prime. After being awakened from sleep, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear and his commanding officer and close friend Alisha Hawthorne survey the landing site with rookie Featheringhamstan. They encounter hostile creatures and attempt to flee, but Buzz unintentionally causes the ship to crash despite his efforts. Feeling responsible for their stranding, Buzz steps forward as the test pilot for a new hyperspace fuel crystal that they must develop in order to return home. One year later, the crew has constructed a new settlement while working on repairs.

Buzz’s catastrophic initial flight is worsened by the effects of time dilation: while he was only in flight for four minutes, four years have passed on T’Kani Prime. Alisha reveals that she is now engaged to a scientist named Kiko, whom she met three years prior. She bestows upon Buzz Sox, an AI robot therapist, the shape and programming behaviors of a feline companion. Alisha directs Buzz to defer any testing of new crystal mixtures until they can find an alternate means of returning the crew home. However, Buzz takes it upon himself to conduct further tests with hesitant approval from Alisha. Despite a dozen unsuccessful attempts, Buzz returns from his most recent flight to learn that Alisha has passed away from old age. In her recorded message to him, she shares her joy and introduces him to her beloved granddaughter, Izzy Hawthorne.
