Lilith (1964) is an American drama film by Robert Rossen, starring Warren Beatty and Jean Seberg. It marks Rossen’s final work and is based on J.R. Salamanca’s novel. The story takes place at Chestnut Lodge, a private mental institution in Rockville, Maryland. A trainee occupational therapist named Vincent Bruce becomes captivated by Lilith Arthur, an alluring and artistic patient with schizophrenia. Lilith reminds Vincent of his late troubled mother who also suffered from mental illness. Despite the challenges of their initial interactions, Vincent manages to help Lilith come out of isolation and explore the outside world with him. As their relationship deepens, Lilith tries to seduce Vincent and eventually he confesses his love for her.

While at a medieval fair, Lilith is seen kissing and whispering to a young boy who offers her a chip of ice. Meanwhile, Vincent remains, observing from a distance without intervening or addressing the situation. His infatuation with Lilith leads him to overlook this occurrence, just as he does with her involvement in a lesbian affair. Another patient, Stephen Evshevsky, also harboring feelings for Lilith, takes his own life after gifting her something he made himself. Vincent returns the gift and Stephen mistakenly assumes it was a rejection from Lilith, causing him to end his own life. This tragedy deeply affects Lilith and she descends into complete madness, severing her last tie to reality.
