Lions for Lambs (2007), an American war drama film directed by Robert Redford, delves into the intertwined lives of a U.S. senator, soldiers in Afghanistan, a reporter, and a college professor in California. Dr. Malley, the idealistic professor, encourages his students Arian and Ernest to make a meaningful impact in the world after their graduation from West Coast University. Despite coming from different backgrounds, they both choose to enlist in the army and serve in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Dr. Malley also tries to connect with another student named Todd Hayes. Unlike Arian and Ernest, Todd comes from a privileged background but has lost motivation due to his disappointment with current events. Instead of focusing on his studies, he spends most of his time as the president of his fraternity.

Malley presents Todd with the option of receiving a solid ‘B’ in the class without any extra effort, or taking another shot at engaging with the material. However, before making his decision, Todd must hear Malley’s account of his former students Arian and Ernest and the reasons for their presence in Afghanistan. At the same time, in Washington, D.C., Senator Jasper Irving, a promising Republican candidate for president, has summoned liberal journalist Janine Roth to discuss his new strategy for the war in Afghanistan. The senator is counting on Roth’s approval to gain public support for his plan: using small units to secure strategic positions in the mountains before the Taliban can seize them.
