Little Birds (2011)
In the American film Little Birds (2011), written and directed by Elgin James, close friends Juno Temple and Kay Panabaker play the roles of Lily and Alison. Living in a financially struggling town near the Salton Sea in California, these two teenage girls have opposing personalities. Lily is rebellious and teetering on the edge of suicidal, residing with her single mother, Margaret. On the other hand, Alison is cautious and responsible, living with her alcoholic father. While Alison finds comfort in her uncle Hogan’s work with cars and horses, Lily dreams of escaping her troubled home life. A chance encounter leads them to join a group of Los Angeles boys who skateboard: Louis, David and Jesse. It becomes clear that Lily develops feelings for Jesse as he kisses her before leaving and writes his number on her arm. This action causes tension between the two friends.
Lily looks to Alison for a favor, borrowing Hogan’s truck so that they can meet up with Jesse and his friends in Los Angeles. Though she is hesitant, Alison eventually agrees. Later, at a convenience store stop, Lily comes to the rescue when Alison gets caught attempting to return stolen goods. Together, they locate the three boys and head to their destination. Walking through the streets, Lily encounters a hustler and demands an apology when he bumps into her. Despite the man’s attempts at reasoning with her, David strikes him with a skateboard before the group quickly flees, leaving Alison shocked. The five of them settle in an abandoned, rundown apartment where other homeless teenagers reside. While there, Alison expresses concern about Jesse potentially being more dangerous than they realize but Lily refuses to hear her out.
