The film, Little Buddha (1993), was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci and written by Rudy Wurlitzer and Mark Peploe. It follows a group of Tibetan Buddhist monks from Rinpung Dzong monastery in Bhutan who are on a search for a child believed to be the reincarnation of their revered teacher, Lama Dorje. Led by Lama Norbu, the monks believe they have found their candidate: Jesse Conrad, an American boy living in Seattle with his architect father and teacher mother. Eager to meet him, the monks travel to Seattle where Jesse becomes captivated by their way of life. However, his parents Dean and Lisa are initially wary and even hostile when Norbu announces his intention to take Jesse back with him to Bhutan for testing.

Dean’s perspective shifts when a close friend and colleague takes his life due to financial struggles. This prompts Dean to join Jesse on a trip to Bhutan. During their travels, they meet two children, Raju and Gita, who are both considered for rebirth. Their journey takes them to ancient Nepal, where a prince named Siddhartha rejects his privileged life in pursuit of understanding universal suffering. As Siddhartha gains knowledge about the essence of existence and consciousness, he confronts Mara (a demon symbolizing the ego) multiple times in attempts to deviate him from his path. Through realizing the deceptive nature of his own ego, Siddhartha reaches enlightenment and becomes the Buddha.
