Live by Night (2016)
Live by Night (2016) is a compelling crime drama featuring Ben Affleck as the writer, director, producer and star. Based on Dennis Lehane’s 2012 novel of the same title, it follows the story of Joe Coughlin, an Irish-American World War I veteran and son of Boston police captain Thomas Coughlin. In the year 1926, Joe falls for Emma Gould, the mistress of notorious gangster Albert White who he and his friends have been targeting through a series of robberies. Despite Thomas’ disapproval and warnings against Joe’s criminal activities, the love between Joe and Emma grows stronger. When Italian Mafia boss Maso Pescatore discovers their affair, he threatens to expose them unless Joe murders White. In a daring move, Joe decides to escape with Emma to California instead. But first, they must come up with funds for their journey. In desperation, Joe commits a bank heist with his partners Dion Bartolo and another man. However, their escape is met with tragedy as three police officers lose their lives in pursuit.
When Joe meets Emma, he discovers she had betrayed him to White. Consequently, White’s men brutally beat Joe and his life is almost taken before Thomas and the police arrive. Eventually, Joe gets arrested for the murders of policemen. Thomas informs Joe that Emma drowned while being chased by law enforcement. Moreover, he coerces Chief Inspector Calvin Bondurant into making sure Joe is charged with a less severe offense rather than murder. This results in Joe receiving a mere three-year sentence. Sadly, two weeks before his release, Thomas passes away from a heart attack. Seeking retribution against White, Joe offers his assistance to Pescatore and becomes an enforcer for Pescatore’s rum business in Ybor City in Tampa, Florida. The area is currently under attack by White and together with Dion, they protect Pescatore’s enterprise in the region. Subsequently, Pescatore orders them to introduce gambling and drugs into Tampa.
